Sometimes there simply are no words; sometimes that’s the best thing. While words can be used to bring consolation and comfort, sometimes they are just unnecessary—even damaging. So often we are quick to give our opinions or advice to those in a tough situation when just being quiet and being present is all that is needed.
Likewise, sometimes there should be no words, or if there are, only words borne out of wisdom. Things spoken in haste are impossible to take back. Words can cut to the bone and at times even further, for it’s been said that the power of life and death are found in the tongue.
Though it may sound cliché, there really is truth in the phrase “think before you speak.”
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and should not get angry easily.” —James 1:19
“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.” —Proverbs 17: 27-28
“Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” —Proverbs 21:23
