True love.

True love is not what you see on TV or what makes your heart swell from some movie. You never hear wedding vows that say, “I take you for better or even better, for richer or even richer, in health and in more health, until death do us part (which will never, ever happen).” There is worse. There can be poorer. There will most likely be sickness. And, we all die.

True love is able to sustain, support and transcend hardships. It doesn’t have an emotional soundtrack playing in the background. It isn’t all horse carriage rides in the park as you ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Real love is hard. But there is nothing greater in this world than a genuine, deep true love.

Perhaps the best listing of the ingredients of love is this:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

If you truly love someone, do more than tell them—show them.
