With only 13 more days until the new year begins (or 3 until the end of the world, if you buy into that Mayan calendar nonsense), we begin to reflect upon the last 352 days.
For some, 2012 has been a good year, but for others it has been difficult, to say the least. Many of us discover that we have deep regrets; we’ve seen hardships and losses; we’ve felt crushing heartaches. We’ve had our faith tested, our resolve squashed, our hope suppressed, or our sense of security pulled away. In this, many of us find ourselves standing at a crossroads.
As we move into 2013, we have a tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. “This is the year that I am going to eat better, exercise more, lose weight, go to church more, spend less…” Resolutions can be a good thing. But without reflection, resolutions are weak. We need to remind ourselves of where we’ve been as we look to where it is that we desire to be. That’s the fuel, the impetus for change.
My 2013 challenge to you is this:
Make this next year the one in which you transform your thinking; when you reorient your position of heart and mind. Do not let your trials define you, but instead let them refine you. If you wallow in self-pity and defeat, guess what? You’ve been defeated and you will most certainly drown. But if you allow trials and challenges to shape your character—to determine your (re)actions—you’ll find strength and confidence, peace amid the storm, and perspective that propels you forward.
The good news is that you don’t have to wait until day one of 2013 to make change. You can make today day one.
I sincerely wish you the very best in 2013 as you continue to grow strong in your life, your faith and in your love for others. God bless.
